International Harvester

Sigh. I'm not a country music fan. We haven't had it on in the house as the kids were growing up. So why are they racing to the stereo each night at about 8 p.m. and tuning in to the local country music station and turning it up LOUD? One song, in particular, which keeps winning the 8:00 evening "top song" slot on the local station.

The songwriter talks about how the slowness of the combine travelling down the road irritates those who have "people to see, places to go." You can google it if you'd like to hear it or read the rest of the lyrics, but I don't really want to get in trouble with the copyright police by posting it all here.





I do think it's kind of funny, as our combine is an International Harvester. But I still don't like country music, much.

    Combines and hay wagons---and blueberry pickers, and me pulling a horse trailer---those are the things rural traffic jams are make of.

Cheap Food?

The topic of cheap food has been on our minds lately. Many people value what we do, but there is the inevitable comparison with grocery store prices. We see it at the market. We overhear the talk as people walk away. We discuss it with other vendors. These photos show the extra value that comes with the way we grow food. We are farming in a way that heals and sustains the land. When the soil is healthy, the plants, animals, and insects will thrive and be healthier themselves. When we eat this food, we will in turn be more healthy. We are working toward environmental sustainability. But a farm that is ONLY environmentally sustainable will not last. It must also be emotionally and physically sustainable—farming can be a demanding job. (Not sure we’ve figured this one out yet.) And there is also economic sustainability to consider.
