A Spring Walk


Last week when the weather was pretending it was spring, a couple of the kids and I headed out to a nearby park for some fresh air. We are fortunate enough to live within 3 miles of two great nature parks. 

We went with the excuse that we needed to check on our letterbox. We also attempted (with mixed luck) to find some other letterboxes. What's that? Don't know about letterboxing? Check this link here. We did find some letterboxes, and took ours in for maintenance (it was missing a pen and some other strategic parts). 



While we were out, we enjoyed seeing some wildlife. 



I suspect that much of our area looked like our walk in the woods before the farmers came and cleared the land.

    Thanks for the inspiring spring photos, we are still buried under piles of snow and mud. Have thought about trying letter boxing before, it sounds like a lot of fun!

    What a lovely, peaceful series of photos. It's still chilly here, but sunny and just lovely. I love this time of year!

    I never heard of Letterboxing - sounds like something I could set up for my grandchildren when they explore the farm on their summer visits. Thanks for the link!

Haying 101

A few posts back, "deep end of the loom" (love that name!) asked me to tell a bit more about the haying process. If you want my version, read on. If you'd like to read the official wikipedia version, click here . Haying happens in three steps: cutting, raking and baling. This process takes several days, as the hay must be dry when baled. Moist hay molds and heats up and has even been known to spontaneously combust, burning down the barn. Gotta have dry hay. This first photo is of our haybine. The haybine not only cuts the hay, it also crimps each piece of long grass in several places, to allow for faster drying. We usually cut hay in the early afternoon, when the dew is gone. When we're done, long row of cut grass lie waiting. The hay is allowed to dry for two to three days, depending on wind and sun conditions. Obviously, the more wind and sun the days hold, the quicker the hay will dry. When we feel like the hay is nearly dry, we go out with the rake. There are diff
