Call in the Professionals

Remember the combine we bought? And the time we put into fixing it?

It did a pretty solid job of combining our pinto beans. And the heirloom beans, which we had to pull by hand (don't ask) because of weeds (don't ask) were fed nicely through the combine, which removes the beans from the plant and the pod.

There was one thing, though, that the guys couldn't seem to fix. The head didn't go up and down smoothly. Sometimes it didn't go up and down at all. You had to baby it, and couldn't depend on it. So now, between bean harvest and corn harvest, they decided to call in a professional.


Sometimes it's worth paying someone who knows what they're doing. Works like a charm! Ready for corn harvest, which should start any day.

    Bummer on calling in the pros but glad it helped and you are ready to go. We have our corn done but can't really feel done as 2 custom neighbors are not ready for us. Hoping for this week! Be safe!

Haying 101

A few posts back, "deep end of the loom" (love that name!) asked me to tell a bit more about the haying process. If you want my version, read on. If you'd like to read the official wikipedia version, click here . Haying happens in three steps: cutting, raking and baling. This process takes several days, as the hay must be dry when baled. Moist hay molds and heats up and has even been known to spontaneously combust, burning down the barn. Gotta have dry hay. This first photo is of our haybine. The haybine not only cuts the hay, it also crimps each piece of long grass in several places, to allow for faster drying. We usually cut hay in the early afternoon, when the dew is gone. When we're done, long row of cut grass lie waiting. The hay is allowed to dry for two to three days, depending on wind and sun conditions.
