Spammers-1, Me-0


It seems that I'm getting a lot of spam here at the blog lately. In an effort to cut down on it, I've added the dreadful word verification form to the commenting process.

I don't like it. But I also don't like spam. If things lighten up (spam-wise), I'll try taking it off for a while. In the meantime, please accept my apology for the additional step when you comment. (By the way, I love comments!)

We are busy planting crops and moving sheep and cows from pasture to pasture and endlessly fixing broken equipment. We are also struggling with the reality that an extended family member is under hospice care. Forgive me if I don't post as often as I should to hold your interest. Life is short. Please go hug those you love...

    I'm here Lona ;) I had to do the same on my blog (word verification) even though all of the "experts" say you shouldn't need to - sorry, I don't care for the spam - ugh.

    I'm sorry to hear about your loved one, it's such a hard thing ;( I hope you remember to take care of yourself xxoo

Haying 101

A few posts back, "deep end of the loom" (love that name!) asked me to tell a bit more about the haying process. If you want my version, read on. If you'd like to read the official wikipedia version, click here . Haying happens in three steps: cutting, raking and baling. This process takes several days, as the hay must be dry when baled. Moist hay molds and heats up and has even been known to spontaneously combust, burning down the barn. Gotta have dry hay. This first photo is of our haybine. The haybine not only cuts the hay, it also crimps each piece of long grass in several places, to allow for faster drying. We usually cut hay in the early afternoon, when the dew is gone. When we're done, long row of cut grass lie waiting. The hay is allowed to dry for two to three days, depending on wind and sun conditions.
